LE COL DE TURINI
Pass located above the Bévéra gorges, one of the entrance gates to the protected perimeter of the Mercantour national park
Located on the D2566, above the Bévéra gorges, the Turini pass, 1,604 m, owes its name to the old road from Nice to Turin that crossed it. Even today, it still constitutes the natural and climatic border between the Middle and High Countries. The difference is mainly due to the change of tree species. In the south, olive trees, cork oaks and maritime pines. In the north, chestnut, fir, spruce, larch, beech and maple trees from the beautiful Turini forest, which covers 3,500 ha. The many bends of the D2566 that go up to the pass make this route a high place of exploits, and controlled skids - during the Monte-Carlo rally where cars compete in speed by taking all the risks on the icy road... From the pass, you can climb to the Authion by the D68.
This site is one of the gateways to the protected perimeter of Mercantour National Park, indicated by the Tueis cabin, where you can find all the necessary park documentation on site. The D68 leads up to the war memorial, erected in memory of the soldiers of Year II who fought the Sardinians in 1793 and the soldiers of the First Division of Free France who dislodged the Germans in 1945. A little higher up, the Pointe des Trois Communes offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Mercantour and the Southern Alps. We can complete the loop of the D68 and go down to the Col de Turini
