THE AUTHION MASSIF
Massif located in the Mercantour National Park, overlooking the valleys of the Vésubie, Roya and Bévéra to Moulinet
Going up to the end of the Bévéra valley, you can access the Massif de l'Authion. Culminating at an altitude of more than 2000 m, it is located in the Mercantour National Park and dominates the valleys of Vésubie, Roya and Bévéra. There have been many and deadly conflicts. In 1794, the French army, under the command of General Bonaparte and Masséna, took over the Authion massif in the Kingdom of Piedmont and Sardinia after very violent fighting. More than a century later, after the attachment of the county of Nice to France (1860), the Authion became a major strategic issue, capable of controlling the new Franco-Italian border. At the end of the 19th century, in a context of deteriorating relations between the two countries, France built a series of forts: the Milles Fourches (1883-1890) and the Redoute des Trois Communes (1898). The Old Cabins camp was intended to house the Alpine Hunters. The fortification programme set up by Maginot will more recently complete this system, in particular with the artillery work of the Caval Plan. The old military road allows you to travel this memory site in about ten kilometres, in one direction only. From the successive parking areas, footpaths provide access to the structures and fortifications
