SAINT-NICOLAS RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL
Nice's recently renovated Russian Orthodox Cathedral of Saint-Nicolas is a must-see.
This monument is one of the most visited in Nice, and is without doubt THE most beautiful religious building of its type outside Russia. Built at the end of the 19th century to cater for the local Russian community, who came to Nice in winter for its mild climate, the cathedral's foundation stone was laid by Tsarevich Nicholas II himself. It's worth noting that a great deal of work was carried out over several years to restore the building's splendor and lustre, both inside and out. The renovation began on December 17, 2012, the cathedral's centenary, and was completed in January 2016.
The cathedral is 52 meters high, inspired by the style of St. Basil's Basilica in Moscow, and has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1987. It is a marvellous example of Russian Orthodox architecture, with its gilded domes, oversized cupolas, colorful frescoes and icons of Orthodox saints. Now administered by the Russian Federation. As you're entering a place of worship, proper attire is required, so bring a suit to cover your shoulders and legs as you explore this jewel.
It's a must-see, as is the memorial chapel. Admission is free, so for a cultural break in your vacation, set off to discover Russian religious wonders in the heart of Nice.
