A museum offering a glimpse into Nice's archaeological past, with collections from the Metal Age and the Middle Ages.
Located in the heart of the Cimiez hillside, this museum is housed in a Belle Époque villa called the "Villa des Arènes", built in 1878 next to the ancient city of Cemenelum, the former capital of the Alpes-Maritimes region. The site comprises 3 thermal remains dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries. There are streets, a residential area with stores and an amphitheatre. Further excavations have uncovered another Palaeochristian complex dating from the5th century, consisting of a cathedral and a baptistery. The latter represents the ultimate manifestation of urban life in Cemenelum. In addition to visiting the well-preserved ruins, the museum, inaugurated in 1989, focuses on the metal ages, from Antiquity to the Middle Ages, as well as on the history, social life, administration and spirituality of Cemenelum 's inhabitants, thanks to various objects recovered during the latest excavations (1950 and 1969). More surprisingly, other objects come from the wreck of the Fourmigue C found off Golfe-Juan. Numerous activities are on offer, including guided tours of the outdoor site and permanent collections every Saturday. During the vacation season, mediation sessions and conferences are organized around more specific themes. A must-see for history and archaeology enthusiasts, as well as for those wishing to discover the history and heritage of the Nice region.
