KAOLIN QUARRIES
The first kaolin layer was discovered between 1825 and 1830. Three kaolin quarries are then exploited in the municipality. In 1913, Dr. Trapenard discovered the first wolfram vein that gave birth to tungsten. By decree of June 2, 1917, he obtained the concession from the Société des Mines des Montmints. This mining company experienced a boom period after the 1940s, with up to 350 employees and 800 inhabitants in the village. Its closure in November 1962, when it provided work for 150 workers, was a demographic shock that was severely felt by the municipality. Today, only the Société des Kaolins de Beauvoir remains active. It ships quality kaolin to many countries and is the leading French producer of tin ore. The other quarries have filled with rainwater over the years and are under the protection of the Natura 2000 Network. From the crossroads of La Bosse, various hikes are marked by carved kaolin rocks, with inscriptions and drawings leading to an orientation table, explaining the formation of kaolin. You will discover a fantastic landscape, with intense blue waters.
