THE PARISH CHURCH
The parish church rebuilt in the end of the 18th century, is classified as Historical Monuments. It is a remarkable combination of several characteristic styles of the region: the façade dates from the Renaissance, the Romanesque bell-tower is of Lombard style, while the choir is Gothic. Inside, the high altar is covered with gilded wood. The chapel of the former convent of the Trinitarian - religious order whose mission was to evangelize the Barbaresques of North Africa and the redemption of the captives - is under the protection of Notre-Dame-du-Bon-Remède. Inside, many paintings evoke the battle of Lepanto (off the Gulf of Patras on October 12, 1571) by which the fleet of the Christian Coalition, led by a Habsburg, Archduke Don Juan of Austria, won a resounding success against the Sublime Porte. It was during this battle that Cervantès, embarked as a sailor on a Spanish ship, lost his right hand.
