INCISA
In the past, a rock blocked the beginning of the central street of Saorge. It blocked the northwest access as a natural rampart against the aggressors. In the 16th century, the struggles between the Sáorgians and the tendasques calmed down, both of them being part of the Duchy of Savoy. The rock then lost its interest: it was pierced, hence the name "Incisa", which clearly improved access to the village and avoided the detour to the Col des Salines. In the process, the main street was laid out and buildings were built, houses and the chapel of the red penitents.
