OLD BRIDGE
An old bridge dating back to medieval times, located in the village of Sospel, once used to transport salt.
The existence of a bridge at Sospel and mentioned in an act of 1217. Emblem and identity of the village for centuries, it constitutes the old toll bridge dating from the medieval period (13th century) used for the transit of salt: every traveler had to pay a bridge-crossing toll to cross the Bévéra river and reach the left bank to take the "Carriera Longa", the old commercial road of the village (today Rue de la République) and thus continue his journey towards Italy. During flood periods, the Pont Vieux fights against the Bévéra current thanks to a projecting angle of the pillar, which splits the water. The two asymmetrical arches allowed a system of pipes to carry drinking water to the left-bank districts. He has a house located on the main pillar. Damaged by time and restored several times, the last time in 1952 following its partial destruction in 1944, only the lower part of the central tower is of origin.
