GLOZEL MUSEUM
This unusual museum in the Montagne Bourbonnaise has been the talk of the town for over a hundred years.
One of the oldest in the Bourbonnais region, celebrating its centenary this year. Around a hundred people accepted the invitation from the Fradin family, the municipality and Vichy Communauté to launch the festivities. Frédéric Aguilera, President of Vichy Communauté, recalled the importance of the Glozel site to the region. Some 3,000 objects have been excavated since 1924. Initial analyses at the time suggested a Neolithic alphabet, calling into question the place and date of the discovery of writing. In 1927, an international symposium of recognized scholars undertook excavations and concluded that the site was a hoax. Émile Fradin, who had discovered the site while ploughing his field, was at the heart of all the controversy. Accused of having invented his discovery, he appeared several times before the courts on suspicion of forgery and fraud. In the 1980s, new excavations were carried out to no avail. The objects were classified into three categories. Animal bones with utilitarian objects (needles, arrowheads, harpoons, daggers, etc.) and artistic objects (rings, necklaces, etc.). Engravings and sculptures are essentially of animals, with the exception of three human representations and a few plant motifs. Second category: stone objects. Polished stone axes, engraved pebbles, necklaces, rings featuring deer, cats and cattle. Last category: terracotta objects. Inscribed tablets, idols, vases and urns with mouthless faces, coils, lamps, handprints.
