NOTRE-DAME-DE-LA-NATIVITÉ CATHEDRAL
Cathedral of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité with a chapel in Vence, with many remains classified as historical monuments
Built in the 4th century on the site of a pagan temple to the glory of Mars, the cathedral was a Merovingian church that was remodeled in the 9th century, only to take on its definitive Romanesque form in the 11th century. It can thus be said to be the synthesis of several styles interwoven over the centuries: Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque. Once the seat of the ancient diocese of Vence, the cathedral is now home to a number of relics listed as Monuments Historiques, including the baptistery decorated with a 1979 mosaic by Marc Chagall, Moses Saved from the Waters, and the stalls by master cabinetmaker Jacques Bellot, executed between 1455 and 1460, a superb example of 15th-century woodcarving in Provence. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Véran, Bishop of Vence. It is the smallest cathedral in France. It is also listed as a Monument Historique.
