ST. ELMO'S CITADEL
La citadelle, a listed site in Villefranche-sur-Mer since 1932, retained its military vocation until 1965.
Classified as a historical monument in 1932, the Citadel houses the Volti, Goetz-Boumeester and Roux Museums and overlooks the impressive harbour of Villefranche. It was the Duke of Savoy, Emmanuel-Philibert, who had this citadel built in 1566 to defend the port and more widely the country of Nice. Designed by Italian engineers, it incorporates innovations in artillery and particularly the use of gunpowder. The place kept its military vocation until 1965, when it was bought by the Commune of Villefranche-sur-Mer.
