Cathédrale Saint-Sauveur d'Aix-en-Provence, with its beautiful 64 m-high square bell tower and restored cloister, is a must-see

The Saint-Sauveur cathedral would be built at the location of an ancient temple dedicated to the god Apollo, which makes it the oldest building in the city. The Christian tradition reports that Saint Maximin, from Palestine, built a modest chapel on the pagan site in tribute to Saint Sauveur. The cathedral, which was built almost 2,000 years ago, has a remarkable architectural diversity. Its silhouette is marked by the beautiful square bell tower which stands at 64 meters high. Built in 1425, the latter was crowned with eight bell towers in 1880. Among the interior ornaments, the triptych of Nicolas Froment's Burning Bush (1476) located in the baroque nave. He is recognized as a masterpiece of the Provençal painting of the 15th century. Cézanne liked to sit down to admire it. In order to preserve it, the triptych is presented in turn open and closed according to a precise timetable. It is particularly visible in the most important religious festivals. Among other treasures, the 7th century baptistry redesigned at the time of the Renaissance. Its wall niches are decorated with 19th century paintings representing the seven sacraments. The cloister, beautifully restored, is to be seen absolutely. The magnificence of the places serves as a backdrop to many musical formations. Another way to discover the cathedral. Since 1996, the cathedral of Aix has been paired with that of Natitigou in Benin. The opportunity for cultural, spiritual and humanitarian exchanges between the two communities.
