SENSITIVE NATURAL AREA - THE FREE MOUNTAIN
When you travel in the plain of the Typical bourbonnaise, your eye is drawn by two lines of ridges located in the eastern and western borders. Witnesses of the past, these limestone slopes animate and structure the landscape. 23 million years ago, the Typical was drowned under a huge tropical lake. Over time, sediment deposits and covers dead animals and plants. Then, in favour of the chess game, the lake empties, while winds and streams shape the current landscape. Follow the marked trail with platelets to discover the richness of flora and fauna, the steppe and Mediterranean affinities, and their geological treasures. Living conditions on limestone slopes (surface soil, high sunlight, climatic drought) are suitable for specific flora and fauna. There are more than 350 plant species. Grasses dominate, but are accompanied by more colourful flowers, such as orchids and amelle aster, a protected wild folk in France. The slopes also support the quantity of butterflies, cicadas, reptiles or birds.
