KAPELLTURM
Kapellturm, featuring a gallery topped by a sixty-metre-high spire
In 1597, a fifth storey was built on the Kapellturm, consisting of a gallery topped by a sixty-metre-high spire. From the top of this gallery, guards kept a constant watch over the city, with the task of reporting any emerging threats. These watchmen rang the hours of the clock with the bell, but the reliability of the latter was more than uncertain at the time, and sundials, scratched into the walls, enabled the correct functioning and accuracy of the clock to be checked and adjusted if necessary.
