BROWN TOWER
The singular tower still dominating the city with a 360° view was once a barracks and then a prison during the Revolution.
This singular tower is an ancient keep dating from the 13th century. Despite its great age, it continues to dominate the city. Once an external sign of the episcopal power of the archbishops over the city, it was first used as barracks and then as a prison during the Revolution. The visit cannot end without reaching the top to admire the 360° view on Embrun and the Durance valley. Dedicated to a landscape museum of the Ecrins Natural Park, the tower is now the subject of archaeological excavations and is temporarily closed.
