THE DEPARTMENTAL MUSEUM
A museum located in Gap, showcasing graphic art and hosting numerous contemporary art exhibitions
Entirely free to the public, the Musée Muséum Départemental has an encyclopedic vocation. It was originally built around a natural history donation. A collection built up in the 18th-19th centuries by two local scientists, featuring naturalized plants and birds. But the museum's extensive permanent collections also offer a wide range. In fact, some items may not be on display during your visit to this lively, ever-changing place. Housed in vaulted basements, the archaeology collection traces the history of human occupation in the Alps from prehistory to the Middle Ages. Paintings from the 14th to the 19th centuries make up the Fine Arts collection. The museum also features 20th-century graphics by Lucien-Achille Mauzan. The sculpture collection consists mainly of works by Jean Esprit Marcellin. The ethnography section explores the traditions of the Queyras region, with beautiful wooden objects and furniture. The museum is also a meeting place for the plastic and performing arts. The museum offers a wide range of exhibitions, events and activities (with the Micro-Folie des Hautes-Alpes space) for all ages to meet the varied expectations of a curious public eager for knowledge. It also acts as a link with the ecomuseums, sites and monuments of the Hautes-Alpes.
