MEMORIAL OF THE LANDING AND LIBERATION OF PROVENCE
The Mémorial du Débarquement (D-Day Memorial) overlooks Toulon harbor, set in a former fort, with an exceptional panoramic view from the museum.
Requested and inaugurated on August 15, 1964 by General de Gaulle, the Memorial honors the memory of the men and women who took part in the landing on the beaches of the Var region on August 15, 1944, and in the liberation of Provence. Often forgotten in favor of Normandy, the Provence landings underscore France's essential role in the war: of the 330,000 soldiers who took part in the operation, over 70% were French. Re-inaugurated by the President of the Republic in 2017, after 18 months of closure and a year of renovation work, the renovated Memorial faithfully recreates the reality of the historical, military and political events of the period. These events are explained in a highly educational way, with the itinerary giving pride of place to first-hand accounts, and to the chronological and thematic aspects of the events. The Memorial is an educational structure adapted to the 21st century, using video and audio resources that make the site highly attractive. Gradually, the viewer is immersed in the past, where all facets of the era are explored. A film projected onto a 17 m-long screen recalls all the military manoeuvres between August 15, 1944, the day of the landings, and August 28, the day the liberation of Provence was completed. Overlooking the Toulon harbor, accessible by cable car, the Memorial, housed in a former 19th-century fort, offers an exceptional panorama.
