Founded in 1243, the Saint André fair is the oldest commercial event in Avignon and the department. It takes place on November 30th and December1st. Initially, the leather market and the horse fair took place at the crossroads of the Porte Ferruce, not far from the Rhône, then a major trade route. In 1371, Gregory XI moved it to the Place des Carmes and Rue Carreterie. Traders from all over the region spread out along the main arteries of the town; today, the lung is the Place de l'Horloge.
