THE ROMAN BRIDGE
The Roman bridge, built by the Romans and featuring three arches, is still in use today.
The Ouvèze is a capricious river, as any villager will tell you. Yet the Romans decided to build a three-arch bridge just downstream from the present one. And it held up until 1620, when it was swept away by a huge flood. Its wooden replacement suffered the same fate two years later. Cautious, the inhabitants opted for tramline ferries. They chose a better location for a new stone bridge, and work began in 1640, lasting seven long years. The same bridge is still in use today.
