The 18th and 19th centuries were a prosperous period for the small village, which underwent numerous modifications. It was surrounded by 11th-century ramparts, and the moat regulated the waters of the Seille. Then gates were opened: That of the Church, the Poustarlon, the Porte du Quatre Septembre and the Porte Rouge, which owes its name to a transcription error in place of "porte Ourouse". It is said that during the French Revolution, a man climbed to the top of the latter and fell to his death. In his last breath, he said he would "die happy" for freedom.
