THE HIGH CHURCH OR OLD CHURCH
Église haute or old church, so named to distinguish it from the other church in the village of Bonnieux, 86 steps to climb.
It's called that to distinguish it from the other church in the village. Why high? Because you'll have to climb 86 steps to reach it, but you'll be in the shade of century-old cedars and sheltered from the mistral! It's because of this climb that the somewhat mournful expression "The dead bury the living" was born. This is because the dead had to be transported on human backs. The building, listed as a historic monument, has undergone numerous restorations and extensions.
