TEMPLE PROTESTANT
A temple reflecting the village's eventful history, marked by the arrival of the Vaudois at the end of the century, and a place to visit
The Protestant temple in Cabrières-d'Aigues reflects the village's turbulent history, marked by the arrival of the Waldensians at the end of the 15th century, persecuted by the Catholic Church. Despite several places of worship in the heart of the village, plans to build a dedicated temple were hampered by persecution and bans. After centuries in hiding, Protestant worship was re-established during the French Revolution, first in a private house and then in a shared temple with other communities. Finally, the commune of Cabrières-d'Aigues decided to build its own temple, completed in 1849. The simple edifice houses a worship hall and sacristy, as well as the pastor's residence. A symbolic sculpture on the side of the temple pays tribute to the Waldensian people, with dates marking their history inscribed on an adjacent stele.
