SYNAGOGUE OF CARPENTRAS
France's oldest synagogue, built in 1367 with a modest facade and listed as a French Favourite Monument in 2022
It is France's oldest active synagogue, built in 1367 and listed as a Monument Historique in 1924. There has always been a Jewish community in Carpentras, dating back to Roman times. Driven out of France in the 13th century, the Jews found refuge in the Comtat Venaissin. Behind its modest 1909 façade, the synagogue hides a treasure trove. On the first floor and in the basement are the mikveh (bath for ritual immersion), as well as the bakery and ovens. The synagogue was ranked 7th out of 14 in the "Monument préféré des Français 2022" competition.
