THE ROMAN ARC
The Arc Marius is a preserved Roman jewel that sits at the foot of Cavaillon's Saint-Jacques hill.
One of the town's oldest monuments. The only vestige of Roman domination, this ancient arch - affectionately called "Arc Marius" by Cavaillonnais - dates from the 1st century. Intended to honor the Roman conquest, it consists of two arcatures supported by four pillars and decorated with foliage. Once part of the former episcopal palace (sold in 1793 and destroyed a few decades later), it was moved stone by stone to its present location at the foot of Saint-Jacques hill in 1880. Listed as a historic monument in 1840.
