THE POPE'S CASTLE
Giant of stone surrounded by ramparts composed of a large main building and four corner towers in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
This stone giant is certainly in ruins but it still imposes with its large crenellated facade overlooking the city. It was Pope John XXII who had it built between 1316 and 1333. Surrounded by ramparts, it consisted of a large main building and four corner towers. During the Wars of Religion, the Protestants seized the village, and the castle and churches were pillaged and burned. The Germans occupied it from 1942 and demolished the keep during their retreat on August 20, 1944. A 360° view offers a superb panorama on the Rhone valley.
