THE PETRARCH COLUMN

Column erected in 1804 at the chasm in honor of the anniversary of Petrarch, located in Fontaine-de-vaucluse
You can't miss it, it sits in the middle of the main square which it dominates from the top of its 20 meters. Erected in 1804 in front of the abyss in honor of Petrarch's 500th birthday, it was moved 20 years later to the center of the village in the presence of the Duchess of Berry. François Pétrarque, a great Italian scholar, poet and humanist of the 14th century, lived in Carpentras and stayed in Fontaine. The place was conducive to solitude and reflection. He felt so well there that he installed his library. But not only that, he also found love there.
