THE PETRARCH COLUMN

Column erected in 1804 at the chasm in honor of the anniversary of Petrarch, located in Fontaine-de-vaucluse
You can't miss it: it sits in the middle of the main square, dominating it from the top of its 20-meter height. Erected in 1804 opposite the chasm in honor of Petrarch's 500th birthday, it was moved 20 years later to the center of the village in the presence of the Duchesse de Berry. François Pétrarque, a great 14th-century Italian scholar, poet and humanist, lived in Carpentras and stayed in Fontaine de Vaucluse. The place was ideal for solitude and reflection. He felt so at home there that he set up his library. But not only that, he also found love.
