LES FONTAINES

Medieval village watering holes, the first of which is the Fontaine Basse, which underwent several reconstructions from 1673 onwards
Before the French Revolution, the Fontaine Basse was the only water source in the medieval village. It was rebuilt several times. In 1673, major development work added a washhouse adjoining the surrounding wall. In 1825, a modern gable roof was installed to cover the washhouse. For several generations, the intimate life of the village was revealed here, through the washerwomen's laundry.
In 1793, the Fontaine Basse no longer had enough water to supply the inhabitants from above, so the authorities approved work on a new fountain, the Fontaine de la Jeanne, which was built in 1812. Three new fountains were built in the 19th century: Fontaine de Filhol, Fontaine de la Place and Fontaine du Cours.
