L'ALLEE DES SARCOPHAGES
A collection of 64 monolithic early Christian sarcophagi, arranged in single file and dating from the to centuries, a must-see
They can be seen to the northeast of the village, encircling the communal cemetery. These 64 monolithic Early Christian sarcophagi, arranged in single file, date from the5th to 6th centuries. This is one of the greatest archaeological treasures of the Comtat Venaissin. Remnants of a Christian necropolis, they are similar to those at the Alyscamps in Arles. We now know that hundreds of them lined the ancient Carpentras-Mormoiron road. The wealth of archaeological digs attests to the importance of the town of Mazan from Antiquity onwards. The decorations on the limestone stones are simple: cross, axe, ploughshare, crown. The current arrangement of graves dates back to 1858, when the current cemetery was enclosed. In 1842, 144 graves had been counted!
