THE TRIUMPHAL ARCH
The Arc de Triomphe is an ancient monument to Roman-Provençal grandeur.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dating from the 1st century, it was, at the time, the main gate of the city. Situated on the Agrippa road and dedicated to the glory of the veteran founders of the Roman colony of Orange, this monument is essential in Romano-Provençal art. Today, it is set back from the city centre. It can be seen very clearly from the top of the hill. The representation of captive Gauls on the Corinthian columns symbolized the domination of Rome. On the attic, a battle scene is depicted between the Roman cavalry and the Barbarians.
