THE SAINT-EUTROPE HILL
Hill full of archaeological remains, which had been surrounded by an abbey and a necropolis in Orange
This hill is full of archaeological remains. A cross, dating from the 17th century, marks the site of what was once the basilica of Saint-Eutrope; an abbey and a necropolis surrounded it. The Wars of Religion ruined the buildings, in 1622-1623, drowned in the ditches of the fortifications of Maurice de Nassau. A path leads to a statue of the Virgin erected in 1855, on the ruins of the castle. The clashes between the United Provinces and the Kingdom of France transformed Orange into the centrepiece of the European political chessboard in the 17th century.
