CIRCUIT TOURISTIQUE
A tourist circuit designed by the tourist office, allowing you to wander around Pernes and visit places not to be missed
Surrounded by ramparts pierced in the 14th century by eight gates and some 15 towers, only three remain: the Porte Villeneuve, the Porte Saint-Gilles and the most picturesque, the Porte Notre-Dame. Don't miss the Tour Ferrande, built in the 12th century, in which, if you opt for a guided tour, you'll discover beautiful 13th-century frescoes. Like a long comic strip, they tell the story of Charles d'Anjou's conquest of Sicily. On the second floor of the Augustins church, you'll find murals by Charles Barbentan. The Ursulines convent houses the Maison des Associations. Among the many Hôtels Particuliers, take time out for a guided tour of the Hôtel de Cheylus. Dating from the 16th century, this house belongs to the Jewish quarter of Pernes, and houses a Mikvé or ritual bath, used in the Jewish religion for purification. A second mikveh can also be seen on the Place de la Juiverie. The Clock Tower dominating the town, the medieval square towers symbolizing power, and the sculpted facades of the mansions symbolizing wealth, are all open books on the history of the Comtat Venaissin under the Counts of Toulouse and the Popes for a thousand years.
