THE CLOCK TOWER

The only vestige of the château of the Counts of Toulouse, which once housed the town of Pernes-les-Fontaines' prisons.
This is the only vestige (12th century) of the Counts of Toulouse's castle, which fell into the hands of the terrible Maingre, who wreaked havoc on the Comtat Venaissin in the 15th century. A watchtower in the time of the Popes, it was later joined by a wrought-iron clock and campanile, supposedly representing the silhouette of Queen Jeanne, wife of Saint Louis' brother. At the top is a weather vane depicting a mouse being chased by a cat. It has given rise to two local sayings: "Il est haut comme le chat de Pernes" and "il est au milieu comme le chat de Pernes". This former keep also housed the town's prisons. You can take a guided tour of these with the tourist office. The panoramic terrace, with its stunning views over the Comtadine countryside and Mont Ventoux, is reached via a charming calade and a slightly dizzying staircase!
