THE FOUNTAINS
Les Fontaines, officially numbering 40 in Pernes-les-Fontaines.
Although Les Fontaines was only added to the town's name in 1936, the oldest fountains date back to the 15th century. Officially numbering 41, they actually number around a hundred, if you count those in private gardens! Pansy, mossy, bearing mascarons or pine cones, they multiplied during the second half of the 18th century. In 1750, a major spring was discovered near the Saint-Roch chapel. Having just gone through a major drought, the inhabitants rallied round and decided to create a fountain in each district. The Cormorant fountain, the most famous, is now a listed historic monument and bears the town's coat of arms. Allow 1 to 2 hours for the fountain tour.
