PROVENÇAL COLORADO
The Colorado de Rustrel, a natural wonder sculpted by ancient ochre quarries, a feeling of America in the Luberon.
Roussillon is not the only village with its own Provencal Colorado. The Colorado de Rustrel is without doubt a major site. Listed as a historic monument, this former ochre quarry, which closed in 1993, is a privileged witness to the region's geological and industrial history. Opened in 1871, the quarry provided a livelihood for many families, until the advent of industrial dyes and the Great Depression of1929 led to its decline and put an end to the adventure.
