THE MUNICIPAL MUSEUM
The province's oldest municipal museum, with richly varied collections dating from prehistory to the present day
Founded in 1859, it is one of the oldest municipal museums in France. Set up at the end of the 19th century by one of its founders, Henri Chrestian, its collections are largely made up of donations. Dating from prehistoric times to the present day, they evoke the past of the people of Saltes through objects from their daily lives and souvenirs from their travels. Visitors will discover a rich collection of minerals, fossils, ancient coins, revolutionary weapons and an Egyptian mummy in its sarcophagus. There's also a fine library of 2,500 books, including a copy of the precious complete collection of Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie.
