EGLISE SAINT-DENIS
A must-see church with its crenellated bell tower and Baroque furnishings, including a and twisted high altar.
It's a brave climb through the narrow streets of Séguret to reach the Romanesque church of Saint-Denis. At its highest point, its crenellated bell tower rises into the sky. Originally Romanesque, it now boasts Baroque furnishings, including the 17th-18th-century twisted high altar and the altar of St Just and St Pasteur, brought from a rural chapel in the late 19th century and restored in 2014. Also on view is the more recent (18th-century ) altar of the Virgin, with its older columns serving as an altarpiece for an earlier high altar. The bell tower staircase occupies the apse. If you're visiting at Christmas, don't miss the Shepherds' Christmas, a festival whose tradition surely dates back to the Middle Ages. Ségurétains of all generations, dressed in traditional costumes, bring to life three tableaux: the Announcement of the Messiah's coming, the Angels' Call to the shepherds and the final Adoration around the crib. The show is followed by midnight mass, in Provençal, of course!
