LA CITE MEDIEVALE
A medieval town worth seeing on a stroll along a small square overlooking the valley, with a beautiful panoramic view of Mont Ventoux
Perched on a rocky spur carved by the Ouvèze River, the medieval town dominates the entire city. It was the looting of the lower town in the 12th century by the Count of Toulouse that prompted the population to move up onto the rock. The old wooden castle was rebuilt in stone. It became a defensive bastion flanked by an impressive square keep, and the new town was surrounded by ramparts. Later, the streets, built of calades (stones set one against the other), were lined with beautiful townhouses. The church, built in the 15th century, is partially enclosed by the ramparts. With its Jesuit-style facade, it became a simple church once the danger had passed and the population had returned to the lower town. The walk through the medieval town ends on a small square overlooking the valley and offering a splendid panorama of Mont Ventoux.
