THE PAPAL TERMINAL CIRCUIT
A circuit featuring 22 1.50 m sculpted cobblestone markers, planted by the popes to mark their territory.
These milestones are the most visible expression of the political and economic stakes that fell upon this land of transition when the popes arrived in Avignon. To mark their territory, the popes authoritatively planted papal milestones. Today, twenty-two milestones mark the boundaries of today's Enclave des Papes. These are sculpted paving stones 1.50 m high. On one side, they represent the coat of arms of the lords who owned the land to be demarcated.
