BAPTISTER
Old baptistry of France built on the remains of a Roman temple, where baptisms took place by immersion, twice a year
From the 6th to the 10th century, fleeing the barbarian invasions that were raging in Carpentras, the bishops transferred the seat of the bishopric to the rock of Venasque. At that time, the bishop celebrated the baptism of adults by immersion twice a year, on Easter and Pentecost eves.
The baptistery is one of the oldest religious buildings in France. Built at the end of the 6th century, it was reworked in the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries. Under the impulse of Prosper Mérimée, the monument was restored and classified on the list of Historic Monuments in 1840.
