SAINT-MICHEL ABBEY
Abbey in Nantua, composed of a church, a cloister and annex buildings with an organ with 425 stops and 2 883 pipes.
This abbey church, consecrated at the end of the 11th century, consists of a church, a cloister and annex buildings. It was built on the site of an ancient abbey destroyed in the 8th century and through which the body of Charles II the Bald is said to have passed. One can admire the superb portal, damaged by the vandals of the Revolution, or the richness of the interior furniture, including a sculpted altarpiece dating from the Renaissance. Also noteworthy is the presence of a painting by Eugène Delacroix from 1836 entitled The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The organ with 425 stops and 2,883 pipes dates from 1845.
