Founded in 1926, the Tannerie Parcheminerie Dumas, one of the last three in France, is still a family-run business, and was awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant (Living Heritage Company) label and listed in the Métiers d'Art Rare inventory in 2011. Specialized in lighting fixtures and orthopedics when it was founded, and the sole supplier of parchment for the drums of the Garde Républicaine in the 60s, in recent years it has developed parchment production for arts and crafts such as calligraphy, illumination, bookbinding and sheathing.
In the museum area, you can learn about the history of parchment and the parchment-making trade, perfect your knowledge of leather working, and admire the last remaining hide dryer in Annonay, a town renowned for its tanning expertise since medieval times. You'll get to know the Dumas parchment tannery through its history, the diversity of trades associated with the activity and the varied uses of the finished product. You'll also have the chance to watch parchment being made from the glass gallery overlooking the parchment factory, which is still in operation. The museum and store are open Monday to Friday, 2pm to 6pm, and groups are welcome by reservation 7 days a week.
Courses for adults and calligraphy and illumination workshops are available for groups of 6 or more, and for school groups. The workshop, located in the heart of the Ets Dumas parchment factory, offers a rare approach to writing and illumination on parchment.
