SIDE CHANNEL AT THE LOIRE DE ROANNE TO DIGOIN
Fed by the dam on the Loire situated 800 metres downstream from the bridge of Roanne, the Roanne Canal in Digoin is 56 km long with 13 locks and 56 bridges. The canal crosses the Loire, the Saône-et-Loire and the Allier. Originally created for the industrial needs of the Roannaise region in 1838 and financed by private capital, the canal will subsequently be bought by the state in 1879. Planned for traffic in goods such as cereals, scrap metal and above all coal, canal activity increased from 150 000 tonnes in 1875 to 500 000 tonnes in 1917. It will cease to fall from that date, particularly due to competition from the railway and then from the road, but also through the use of new energy that replaces coal. Now "the quiet canal" is used for recreational boating. It is possible to cruise or rent barges in Digoin, Roanne and Briennon. The canal is appreciated by hikers, who take advantage of the slipway path along the canal, and also the fishermen.
