SYNDICAT D’INITIATIVE
The tourist office occupies the house in Nazareth at the top of the village. Chalençon, a village sitting on the side of a cone-shaped mountain - from which it takes its name - overlooks the Verdeau River - a tributary of the Eyrieux river - and was once the most important in the region. Here, Caesar's generals built Roman roads and a first fort. Charlemagne replaced it with a castle with three towers and a simple fortress. Throughout the Middle Ages the importance of the city grew until it became one of the oldest baronies of the Vivarais, which Diane de Poitiers inherited in the 16th century. The Protestant temple of the 19th century is next to the church of the 12th and 14th centuries.
