ST. REGIS BASILICA
Basilica dedicated to Saint Jean-François Régis, one of the evangelizers who went to meet the infidels of Ardèche.
This basilica is dedicated to Saint Jean-François Régis, one of the evangelists who went to meet the infidels of the Ardèche. He died in 1640 during a winter mission and his funeral attracted a considerable crowd, giving rise to the cult of Saint Regis. It was the "success" of this pilgrimage that decided in 1865 to build a church large enough to accommodate this crowd. The basilica was consecrated in 1877 and remains one of the main monuments of religious art in the 19th century, which was turning towards machinismo.
