PRIORESS BENEDICTIN
A rural priory in charge of running an estate for the benefit of Mozac and Cluny.
With part of the conventual buildings, this church was built at the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century. It was a parish church until the construction of the basilica in 1935. It was classified as a historical monument in 1968. A Benedictine-Cluniac priory, Saint-Germain-des-Fossés depended on the abbey of Mozac which, since 1109, was of Cluniac obedience. It was a rural priory in charge of exploiting a domain for the benefit of Mozac and Cluny. The church is surrounded on the north by the cemetery. The priory buildings are attached to the south side of the church, enclosing a courtyard, formerly occupied by the cloister. The original bell tower was destroyed during the Revolution: the present one dates from 1839. During the Revolution, the buildings were sold as national property and were put to various uses before being acquired by the municipality in 1979, which undertook a long restoration.
