GLASSHOUSE PLATEAU TOURBIERE
The last large open plateau of mountain moorland in the Monts de la Madeleine, where the peat bog was formed 4,600 years ago.
This emblematic area of the Montagne Bourbonnaise, stretching as far as the Loire, is the result of the accumulation of numerous plant species over the millennia. To preserve this unique vegetation, a 1.5 km-long wooden pontoon bridge has been built, along with an orientation table offering a breathtaking view of the Roanne plain, the Alps, the Chaîne des Puys, the Loire valley, the Forez plain and the Monts du Lyonnais. This area is an example of nature in a unique biological balance, with no trace of human intervention or urbanization. It offers the opportunity to connect fully with nature in its untamed state. The trail is enhanced by reading tables that provide a better understanding of the riches of this plateau, named Verrerie in reference to the glassmakers who settled in Saint-Nicolas-des-Biefs in the 17th century. At the time, the area was covered with coniferous trees and ferns used to fuel the furnaces. Classified as a Natura 2000 zone for its fragile and diverse flora and fauna, the area is home to species such as bilberries, emblematic of Montagne Bourbonnaise desserts, cottongrass, sphagnum moss, horsetail, as well as numerous water trees and shrubs. A variety of butterflies, alpine newts, red-legged frogs, lizards, hares, hen harriers, shrikes and hobby falcons can also be seen, making the plateau a popular spot for local wildlife.
