GARE DE CHAMONIX-MONT-BLANC
Inaugurated in 1901 and extended in 1908 to Le Chatelard in Switzerland, the Saint-Gervais - Le-Fayet - Vallorcine - Martigny railway line combines two sections (TER and TMR) served by the Mont-Blanc Express. It takes 1 hour and 20 minutes to cover the 37 km of the line with 12 daily departures. The French TER is accessible free of charge on presentation of the guest card between the Servoz and Vallorcine sections. Three possible stops via the SNCF network: Place de l'Aiguille du Midi, in the south; Place de la gare, in the centre; and Les Praz, north of Chamonix. From the south stop, take the rack railway to Montenvers (1,913 m) or to reach the Aiguille du Midi cable car. From Vallorcine, you can take the Swiss TMR connection for 90 minutes of breathtaking journey to Martigny, the Gallo-Roman city of Valais, also renowned for its Art Foundation. Despite slopes of nearly 9%, the power line uses a simple traction system, unlike the Montenvers rack and pinion trains and the Mont Blanc Tramway (TMB). This mythical train serves the smallest stations on the route. From Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet, you can access the TMB, which winds along the slopes of the Mont-Blanc massif, to the Nid d'Aigle (2,380 m) of the Bionnassay glacier in summer and to the Bellevue plateau (1,794 m) and the Les Houches ski area in winter. A set of picturesque and practical routes that allow you to enjoy a spectacular panorama on high altitude trains!
