NOTRE-DAME-DES-MALADES SAINT BLAISE
This church is a unique testimony of the religious Art Deco style at the peak of its glory.
This double construction is not without surprise to the visitor: two churches very different in style are next to each other! Located in what is known as the old Vichy, the Saint-Blaise chapel was at the time a place of ardent Marian worship because of the many miracles that were performed there. This small chapel was strongly modified in the XIXth century, it is now attached to a modern church with which it communicates. The church of Notre-Dame-des-Malades was built between 1925 and 1956 by the architects Chanet and Liogier, using a revolutionary material for the time: reinforced concrete, which allowed for a certain architectural boldness at an affordable cost. It is a unique testimony of the religious Art Deco style at the peak of its glory. It is worth a visit for its exceptional interior decoration, rich in materials such as marble and onyx and the use of various artistic techniques: painting, mosaics, glasswork by the master glassworkers and mosaicists of the Ateliers Mauméjean. Columns, domes, stained glass windows, friezes are all remarkable. The exterior of the building is as sober as the interior is rich. The bell tower reaches 57 m above the ground. Since July1, 2020, this highest point of the city of Vichy is illuminated every evening at dusk. Its black Virgin has long been venerated for her miracles. The tourist office offers a guided tour.
