THE NAPOLEON III COTTAGES
Visit Chalets Napoléon III, an imperial-style building inspired by Swiss chalets and American colonial architecture.
Along the Boulevard des Etats-Unis, six chalets were built by the architect J. Lefaure between 1862 and 1864 for the emperor and his suite. They were inspired by Swiss chalets as well as by American colonial architecture, using stone, brick and wood. The Marie-Louise chalet (no. 109) was the first to be built in 1863 to house the Emperor. However, the Emperor only stayed there for one season, judging that the large balconies on the street were detrimental to his privacy. He therefore had the Chalet de l'Empereur (n° 107) built, which this time overlooks the park. The ironwork of the door is decorated with the letter N, topped by the imperial crown. The Chalet des Roses was intended for Achille Fould, Minister of Finance of Napoleon III. The chalet of Clermont-Tonnerre (n° 109 bis), captain, in the service of the security of Napoleon III, is built on the model of that of the emperor. The chalet known as the Empress' or Eugenie's (n° 105) was originally reserved for the Emperor's guests. Two other chalets were established at the entrance of the bridge, one reserved for the housing of the park guard, the other for the administration, used as a granting office from 1885 to 1932, the latter was destroyed when the bridge was widened. In the Kennedy Park, the Marquise de Sévigné, represented by a Vichy sculptor in 1996, looks towards the Pavilion, where legend has it that she stayed.
