This arboretum brings together almost 3,500 species from around the world around its castle, park, stream and chapel.
Covering 20 hectares, the Balaine arboretum is the oldest private botanical and floral park in France, which has remained in the same family since its creation in 1804. It was listed as a historical monument in 1993 and today brings together nearly 3,500 species from all continents around its 18th century castle and 19th century chapel. Combining English garden and exotic species, it includes a landscape garden, with the theme of water, factories, footbridges spanning rivers. A superb collection of old roses, a collection of 250 Japanese maples. Each season brings its own set of blooms, so several visits are necessary. In spring, come and admire azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons, magnolias, davidias, viburnums, halesias and a magnificent collection of hornbeams. In summer it is the turn of the irises, and the superb collection of old roses and hydrangeas. Autumn is the season of exotic coloured deciduous trees, hickories, nyssas, liquidambars, acers palmatum, sassafras, quercus, fagus, bald cypress. And in winter, under the snow, parrotia persica, hamamelis, sycoparrotia semidecidua, corylopsis, lonicera standishii, lonicera fragrantissima. Every year in April, during the plant festival, the Arboretum pays tribute to its creator. An appointment allowing to go to meet about fifty exhibitors. In addition to the discovery of roses, medicinal, aquatic, climbing and aromatic plants, you will discover various crafts and surprising activities related to the plant world.
